Progressive Metal is not simply the domain of Europe; we have plenty of bands at the forefront of the movement making waves nationally and internationally. There are a host of tours coming up over the next few months from our homegrown talent, so if you’re into the complex and the cerebral, we’ve got you covered.

Acolyte (VIC)

Acolyte have been catapulted into recognition as one of the most active and charismatic bands of the Melbourne Prog scene over the last year or so. Frontwoman Morgan-Leigh Brown is an inspirational force to be reckoned with, bringing the audience along for the journey on every show. A true coup for the band was the joining of David Van Pelt, also the keyboardist for Melbourne’s premiere Symphonic Metal band, Divine Ascension. Acolyte are currently hard at work on their new album, and will showcase some of their latest material on their upcoming Australian tour. Now is the time to get on board with this band before they get even bigger!

Beast Impalor (ACT)

Beast Impalor truly embody the insanity emanating from our nation’s capital. With a sound that could be described as extreme cabaret and a stage show dripping with madness that makes Devin Townsend look like the picture of normality, a Beast Impalor show is one that you will never forget. As if that weren’t enough, Beast Impalor will be supporting the similarly insane Troldhaugen at The Basement on 9 September. Just imagine H. P. Lovecraft got his hands on Arkham Asylum, and you’ll have the idea. Tickets on sale soon!

Caligula’s Horse (QLD)

Caligula’s Horse are at the forefront of the Australian Progressive Metal wave, with international dates supporting the likes of Opeth and Anathema almost a commonplace. Back at home, Caligula’s Horse have headlined ProgFest, and will soon be embarking on a national run in support of their new album, In Contact. Caligula’s Horse are known for their heavy and complex compositions, as well as a social conscience that challenges the listener to consider themselves and their place in the world. Frontman Jim Grey’s distinctive voice and dynamic stage presence leads a band that will continue to build a stronger name for Australian Prog.

Gods of Eden (NSW)

Gods of Eden deliver Progressive Metal on a divine scale. Their music is complex and hypnotic, with some “Djent” elements comparable to Tesseract. The interplay of clean vocals and growls should be pleasing to fans of both brutal and melodic Metal, with both styles very accomplished as vocalist Ian Dixon delivers powerful expressions of anguish. One might also compare Gods of Eden to some of Dream Theater’s edgier work, but with a more symphonic focus. Gods of Eden will be playing Metal United Down Under in Wollongong on September 16, with FREE ENTRY!

Voyager (WA)

What better way to introduce Voyager than to point out that they’ve been nominated for the Progressive Music Awards 2017 for International Band of the Year? Voyager are a band with plenty of international clout, with upcoming dates in both the UK and Italy. At home the band have supported the likes of Opeth and Nightwish. As the band’s name suggests, their music is sure to take you on a journey, with cosmic compositions, fiery attitude and yes – that is a keytar. While Voyager’s most recent album “V” was released three years ago, their worldwide fan base is no doubt eager for the next installment in this band’s upward trajectory.
