The spirit of Lilith is truly embodied in the Australian women who front Metal bands from all around the nation. The passion of these sirens is an asset to any gig, whether it be a headliner, a local festival, or supporting an international band. Along with the powerful vocal talent, these bands sport bombastic heaviness across the Gothic, Symphonic, Progressive and Power Metal genres.

DIVINE ASCENSION (VIC)

With two amazing albums under their belt and a third on the way, Divine Ascension are Australia’s answer to the symphonic glory of Epica and Nightwish. Frontwoman Jennifer Borg has a voice to rival any of the big European names. Divine Ascension supported Kamelot on their last Australian tour, and will be one of the top-billed acts for November’s Scorching Steel Festival. Epic compositions, virtuosic solos, dramatic lyrics and vocal pathos are all the purview of Divine Ascension.

FLYNN EFFECT (QLD)

Tomina Vincent’s powerful vocals lead a charge of Gothic Metal to please fans of Lacuna Coil, Delain and Evanescence, so it’s no wonder Flynn Effect were chosen to support Lacuna Coil in Brisbane. Flynn Effect have just released their second album Obsidian, expanding their sound to encompass a broad range of influences while retaining the Gothic, and occasionally Industrial Metal foundation of their debut Skin. Flynn Effect have recently played a number of interstate shows, and will be playing a hometown album launch show at the New Globe Theatre on September 16.

ICARUS LIVES (WA)

Icarus Lives are a fast-paced, intense and atmospheric melodic Metal band. Fans of more recent Lacuna Coil will find a lot to like with Icarus Lives’ first full-length release, Vantablack. The combination of clean and harsh vocals is beautifully balanced, and the band exude unmistakably Australian attitude. Icarus Lives will bring their insatiable energy to Metal United Down Under Adelaide on September 16!

SLUDKO (TAS)

For a dirty Thrash sound led by female vocals, look no further than Sludko. Barbara Slad has a powerful voice that drops to a growl at a moment’s notice. Alex Banman and Charlie Wood provide scorching guitar solos, and just as readily chunky riffs full of heaviness. Every band member has plenty of room to show off their talents in Sludko’s compositions. In their more downbeat moments, Sludko might bring to mind Black Sabbath and occasionally old Mercyful Fate, but will more often recall heavier bands of the Thrash milieu like Skeletonwitch.

TEMTRIS (NSW)

Temtris are a Thrash-infused melodic Metal band with a sprinkling of the heavy likes of Amon Amarth thrown in. Vocalist Genevieve Rodda provides an incredibly powerful presence, with her performance comparable to the more aggressive moments of Todd La Torre (Queensryche) or Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden). Not to be outdone, guitarists Anthony Fox and Anthony Hoffman lead a massive instrumentation that has even seen the band support classic Metal luminaries Accept. Temtris are currently working on a fifth killer album, but have still had time for recent live appearances, including Brisbane’s Shredfest!
