Australia is a far-flung ex-penal colony filled with deadly wildlife and harsh natural conditions. Most of the continent is a bleak desert wasteland, with few coastal pockets of civilisation. It’s no wonder than that the harsh spirit of Black Metal is alive and well amongst our Metal community. The burning desert is a far cry from the frozen forests of Scandinavia, but you can still feast your ears on the true spirit of evil right here in Australia.
ATRA VETOSUS (TAS)
Hailing from Tasmania, Atra Vetosus have an excuse to draw on the frostbitten sensibility of Scandinavian melodic Black Metal. Atra Vetosus’ compositions alternate between harsh and mournful, and also between dense Metal and the beautiful simplicity of piano. As with the best Black Metal bands, one can feel the strong presence of the power of nature throughout the music, reminding the listener of the untamed elemental beauty pulsing through Tasmania’s forests. Atra Vetosus will play the Bendigo Hotel in Melbourne for Rituals of Torture and Death on 14 October!

DEAD RIVER RUNS DRY (NSW)
With a fast and dirty sound, there are no frills and no holds barred with Dead River Runs Dry. Though melodic guitars are woven through their tracks from time to time, more often Dead River tend to the heavy, lumbering and doom-laden, or the frenetic pace of double-kick and blast beats. Dead River’s music benefits from switching pace and mood often, never allowing the listener to become complacent – rather, they command attention and indeed, obeisance. Dead River Runs Dry will appear at the Stigmata Promotions 15th anniversary show at the Bald Faced Stag in Sydney, 25 November!

Deadspace provide intensely melancholic, atmospheric Black Metal on a monumental scale. In addition to the usual dirges, Deadspace have a stronger focus on guitar solos than many Black Metal bands, showcasing the talents of Oliver Royer and Thomas Major. Chris Gebauer’s vocals of course consist primarily of guttural growls and screams, but Deadspace also indulge in tortured cleans from time to time that may please fans of Marilyn Manson. Deadspace’s upcoming split EP with Happy Days, Reaching for Silence, will be available September 30.

FUNERAL MOON (SA)
The Black Metal of raw, unbridled passion is alive and well in the music of Funeral Moon. With relentless drums and hypnotic guitars, this is the classic spirit of Black Metal as emanated from Norway in the early 90s. Funeral Moon will play an intimate and sweaty show at Belgrave’s Gin Lane on 21 October, the forested hills of the outermost suburbs of metropolitan Melbourne providing a fitting backdrop for this fury. This is a FREE show, so you have no excuse not to show up!

Hexreign have been through a number of line-up changes over the years, but mastermind and frontwoman Kama Way has consistently been at the helm. A charismatic performer with harsh vocals to wake the dead, she also occasionally breaks into soaring cleans that will leave you wondering how both these sounds come from the same set of pipes. Hexreign produce dirty, distortion-ridden Black Metal that hails Satan with the darkest of the Scandinavians. With a line-up refresh in progress, they are also currently putting together a live EP recorded earlier this year at Melbourne’s (in)famous Tote.
