When it comes to Thrash Metal, here in Australia we’re spoilt for both quantity and quality. Thrash is arguably the most prolific genre on the Metal scene, and why not? Some of the biggest influences on Metal worldwide have hailed from this genre, including the Big 4 themselves – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. This is a genre with pedigree, and believe me when I say Australia does it proud.

ASYLUM (QLD)

Fast-paced and riff-focused, with vocals courtesy of Jamie Stephenson that have a growling edge but still fit solidly within the Thrash vein, Asylum provide a catchy sound that carries the audience through their headbanging songs. The band are no stranger to soaring solos either, with Shane Robins and Rob Armstrong really rounding out their sound. Asylum have supported the likes of Tankard and Accept, as well as embarking on their own Japanese tour. Their next appearance however will be the Scotchtoberfest gig with Night Legion, Darklore and Mammoth at the Crowbar on 6 October.

ENFORCE (WA)

EnforcE are a fast-paced classic Thrash band with a sound that showcases the talents of every member in varied, but always aggressive songs. It has to be said however that the true standout of the line-up is Jorbie Uangakore with his frenetic solos. Formed in 1997, the band have a truly impressive catalogue of support gigs under their belt, including Destroyer666, Behemoth and Kreator. Enforce will be playing with Psychonaut, Bloodlust and Nails of Imposition at the Boston in WA, so get along if you’re in the area!

HARLOTT (VIC)

If you like your Thrash unrelentingly aggressive in the style of Slayer, then Harlott will not disappoint you. Mainstays of the live scene, Harlott are known for stepping up to any challenge that dares cross their path, including playing in pitch darkness as lighting failed entirely, and playing with the smoke machine stuck on 100 – the room filled to the point where punters could literally not see their hands right in front of their faces. Harlott warmed the crowd up for the spoken word tour of Megadeth’s David Ellefson, not to mention supporting Annihilator across Europe in 2015. But you need only make it to the Bendigo Hotel to next catch Harlott live when they play the Heavy Metal Halloween show.

SE BON KI RA (SA)

One of the most energetic live bands you’ll ever see, Se Bon Ki Ra have set fists pumping and heads banging all over Australia. Their style is at the heavier end of Thrash and groove, and will particularly appeal to fans of Lamb of God. Despite their brutal musical leanings, Se Bon Ki Ra are quite a cerebral band, as captured in their name which is a Haitian proverb meaning “Good is rare” – a traditional sign-off blessing. Se Bon Ki Ra will be celebrating a decade of Metal with Octanic and Arcadia at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel in Adelaide on 24 November. Check out a Metal band with some of the most positive energy out there!

SEGRESSION (NSW)

Segression blend classic Thrash with an early 2000s Nu Metal sound. There’s a particular groove to Segression that carries it beyond the clichés of Nu Metal, but at the same time their earlier sound will doubtless please fans of the likes of Coal Chamber. Their more recent material however moves to a heavier place that infuses as much Death Metal as their earlier work infused Nu. Nevertheless, their new work maintains the undercurrents of groove that continue to provide catchy hooks. Segression will be playing a hometown show in Wollongong on 13 October, with none other than Frankenbok headlining.
