You haven’t lived until you’ve been in an Australian Power Metal crowd. Whenever an international band tours and there’s local Power Metal in support, the love and devotion from the crowd are overwhelming. In fact, there have been times the crowd seemed even more excited to see the local talent than the internationals! While not quite as prolific as the Thrash scene, the Australian Power Metal scene is rock solid with some of the most dedicated bands and fans you’ll ever meet. Here are some of the best.
What do you get when you combine Heavy Metal, Dungeons and Dragons and an excellent sense of humour? You get Saralisse, and while the content is hilarious, the band are no joke. Every Power Metal tune these guys belt out is an absolute banger filled with orcs, Viking ships, dragons, magical lands and generally far-fetched situations. Dressed in colourful robes, they absolutely look the nerdly part they cheerfully embrace. That being said, don’t underestimate literal guitar wizards Sir Ori and Sir Jordi – this is band that will surprise you. Saralisse will be supporting Valhalore at Vik-toberfest Sydney, 21 October at The Lair, alongside Darker Half and Carmeria!

If you yearn for the magic of Nightwish’s Oceanborn, then look no further than Seraphic. The self-styled “Piano Metal” band is indeed often led by virtuosic keys courtesy of Sam Wolstenholme, who also provides the utterly beguiling vocal presence that gives Tarja Turunen a run for her money. Not to be outdone however is lead guitarist Erwin Febrianto, whose shredding solos take the band to ever greater heights. Seraphic will be playing Ye Gods of Metal at the New Globe Theatre on November 18 with headliners Witchgrinder and 20 other awesome bands, so get along and check out some beautiful songs from the debut album Journey to Illumination.

SHADOW REALM (SA)
For a darker and more dramatic breed of Power Metal with elements of Thrash, Shadow Realm have you covered. With a vibe reminiscent of Iced Earth or Symphony X, Shadow Realm create a dystopian landscape that contrasts the high fantasy of many other Power Metal bands. Vocalist Torsha Khan brings the high, operatic technique with the best of them, but also a level of aggression akin to Tim “Ripper” Owens – an approach that really sets Shadow Realm apart. Shadow Realm will be playing the Scorching Steel Festival in Melbourne on Saturday 11 November, before supporting Anvil alongside Hidden Intent the next day at Fowlers Live in Adelaide!

SILENT KNIGHT (WA)
Silent Knight have international pedigree having recently completed a German tour, including playing the Headbangers Open Air Festival, promoting their re-recorded debut album The Masterplan. The band aren’t resting on their laurels though, as they launch into a headlining tour of Australia, including an appearance at Brisbane’s Ye Gods of Metal festival. The German tour was quite fitting, as Silent Knight are heavily influenced by German Power Metal of the ilk of Helloween, as well as being comparable to other European bands like Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius.

VANISHING POINT (VIC)
The pathos of Vanishing Point’s music cannot be overstated, and fittingly, they’ve even taken their magical songs all the way to Europe in support of Sonata Arctica. The band propel their music into listeners’ consciousness on the wings of Silvio Massaro’s incredible voice. Both lyrics and musicianship are top-notch, and hopefully it won’t be long before the band release the new music they’ve begun to tease! In the meantime, you can catch up on their classic tunes with the re-release of 2000’s Tangled in Dream, or their latest album and instant classic, Distant is the Sun.
