1997 was a great year for music fans!
Deftones released Around The Fur, In Flames released Whoracle, Strapping Young Lad released City and Fuel released Sunburn; the last album bringing us such great songs as ‘Shimmer’, ‘Sunburn’ and ‘Bittersweet’ to name a few. Twently years on, Fuel are celebrating this milestone by embarking on a world-wide tour!
What’s even better, is that Fuel are kicking off this world-wide celebration on Australian shores; breaking a seventeen year drought between drinks. OVERDRIVE was fortunate enough to speak to front-man Brett Scallions about this upcoming milestone tour, however this interview didn’t start off perfectly…Scallions actually missed the first phone call from this interviewer; he was actually sitting in front of his computer working away on Pro-Tools, preparing for Halloween at the end of the month! Scallions gave a small insight into his personal life, explaining how “my wife is a really massive Halloween fan; she’s decorating the home and everything, so we’re going to scare some people! I’m recording some creepy tracks to play around the house; it’s really fun (laughs)”
Before too long though, it was down to business; the first topic of discussion was about the motivation to get out on the road and celebrate twenty years of Sunburn; Scallions gave a really good insight into the mindset of the Fuel bandcamp:
“Because I can! (laughs) There’s a very small group of people who can celebrate twenty years of platinum success and I’m honoured and thrilled to be a part of it. What better way is there to go out and celebrate the album than by playing it to the fans? It’s a celebration of life, music in general and having a great time; that’s the motivation. You know, you can dream about what you want to do in life; but if you don’t actually go forth and pursue it, you’ll never reach your dream. Luckily for myself, I had the dream and hallelujah I became a successful rock-star; you’ve got to get out and celebrate those things by saying thank you to the fans that ultimately put you there.”
Delving a little further into the mindset of Fuel, Scallions briefly touching further on why this milestone tour is starting in Australia, explain how ”it’s been far too long since we’ve been to Australia and I feel like the people have been neglected! We’ve been trying to stop that neglect as we’ve been trying to figure this out for years now. We’re so excited to finally get back to Australian shores after all these years and bring back the Fuel experience.”
Touching on a personal perspective, Scallions is unsuccessful in being able to pick a favourite song, starting off with a laugh before expressing “man, I don’t know if I necessarily have a favourite, as they all have their moments! They’ve all got their own personality; plus it varies as to what mood I’m in, as to what songs are more of a favourite to perform (laughs again). One particular song that does come to mind however is ‘It Comes To This’; when we get out on the road and start to perform all the songs off the record, we’ll see which one works its way to the top!”
Knowing that it has been seventeen long years since Fuel last stepped foot on Australian shores, this interviewer was curious as to which city Scallions was most excited to visit in 2017. Scallions was very quick to express that “Sydney is a must go to; Sydney is a beautiful city and it’s one of my absolute favourites, so it’s an absolute must. But you have so many beautiful places there; from Melbourne to Perth to Adelaide to both the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, there’s just so many amazing spots that we’re looking forward to going everywhere and enjoying all that Australia has.”
So just what on stage antics can Australian fans expect to see from Fuel on this milestone tour? Scallions raised a valid point, mentioning how “there’s a twenty year difference from who I am now versus who I was when the Sunburn album came out; I probably had a lot more energy and was able to run around on a stage back then! The energy will always be on stage physically; whilst I probably won’t run around with my hair on fire like I used to, prepare to see a middle age man running around on stage going nuts” before ending with a massive laugh from the gut.
JUST IN CASE SCALLIONS DOES DECIDE TO SET HIS HAIR ON FIRE, MAKE SURE YOU PACK A MINI FIRE EXTINGUISHER IF YOU INTEND TO BE ON THE RAIL!
