EYE OF THE ENEMY (VIC)

Eye of the Enemy are one of the most aggressively brutal Death Metal bands you’ll encounter in Australia, and that’s saying something. Frontman Mitch Alexander has an unparalleled talent for getting the pit moving, yet at the right moment will surprise you with heartfelt, melodic clean vocals as a contrast with his demonic screams and roars. The prolific guitarist Chris Themelco is a more recent addition to the band, also known as the frontman of melodic Death Metal paragons Orpheus Omega, and the powerhouse producer of Monolith Studios. Eye of the Enemy have rightfully shared the stage with such brutal brothers as Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth and Amon Amarth, and will no doubt bring outright carnage to Scorching Steel with their fans packed into the “trendy Bendy.”

GYPSY (NSW)

This is one for the purists. Gypsy are ready to bring you classic Heavy Metal! You could be forgiven for thinking the Gypsy boys are leading a British invasion, so perfectly do they capture the spirit and sound of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in particular. There is a certain intonation to Tommy Adams’ vocals that really sits in that space between 70s punk and 80s Metal, with the punk attitude and the Metal melody, but ultimately leaning more towards Judas Priest than Megadeth. In such a diverse scene, it’s rare to find a band who so authentically capture the roots of Metal. Look no further than Gypsy.

HORIZONS EDGE (VIC)

Horizons Edge are a full-blown fantasy Power Metal band full of bombastic instrumentation, epic storytelling, and operatic female vocals. Frontwoman Kat Sproule brings boundless energy and charisma to the stage, with an approach to audience interaction reminiscent of the endearing Simone Simons of Epica, but a vocal style more akin to Within Temptation’s Sharon Den Adel. Overall the band’s sound is pure European Power Metal along the lines of Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius.

THE LEVITATION HEX (ACT)

The Levitation Hex are a Progressive Death Metal band who draw on a range of influences, from the psychedelic 70s to the classic Death and Thrash Metal we’ve all come to know and love. Mark Palfreyman, also of Alarum, brings bass work that is prominent in a similar fashion to Meshuggah, but the overall feel is more melodic, as if the latter were infused with some of Dream Theater’s compositional style, particularly of the pre-Mangini era. The Levitation Hex are a deeply versatile band who are sure to have listeners sitting up and taking notice, along with banging their heads, of course.

WARTOOTH (QLD)

A Thrash Metal band with old-school stylings, Wartooth push the classic genre into a space that is not easy listening, but made for getting into the pit to. Wartooth embrace the discordance that runs through classic Death Metal, and lead with a vocal style that draws more on Slayer’s Tom Araya than any of the other Big 4 bands. Wartooth’s approach is relentless, with drummer Wally Knappstein providing the engine that keeps the whole operation moving at breakneck speed, while his brother Andy Knappstein rips his guitar apart with solos when he’s not providing vocals.  Speed is this band’s purview, but they can still bring it down for pure headbanging moments.
