This week we take a look at an upcoming Queensland festival, Ye Gods of Metal! With bands flying in from New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia in addition to plenty of Northern talent, this one is going to blow the roof off the New Globe Theatre and then some! We’ve already covered some of the big names on the bill in previous editions of OVERDRIVE OZ, but there are plenty more to sink your teeth into.
ANNO DOMINI (NSW)
Anno Domini are a symphonic melodic Death Metal band with a flair for the dramatic. They’re no strangers to crushing riffs, but also build intricate solos into their work through the twin guitar stylings of Michael Aldeguer and Dan Straughen. Their work carries Anno Domini’s bombastic compositions into almost progressive territory, while bassist Dan Kendall and particularly drummer Amir Bukan provide a foundation of pure heaviness. The compositions throughout The Cold Expanse have a Middle Eastern touch that lends a certain gravitas, and vocalist Andy Suppradit completes the soundscape with clean vocals that would easily suit Dream Theater or Fates Warning to complement his growls.

What would you get if you combined the speed and riffs of Metallica with a vocalist with the attitude of Lzzy Hale? The answer is something like Devonian, a fast-paced face-melter of a band with the equally charismatic and aggressive Diletta Luna front and centre. Having recently played the Brisbane show of Metal United Down Under, Devonian will no doubt gather their following even more with this appearance at Ye Gods of Metal. Let Craig Myers’ bass rumble carry you through the groove before Simon Gardner and Hayden Roberts propel you into the stratosphere!

IN DEATH (QLD)
In Death are a more traditional Death Metal band, with devastatingly heavy riffs and Krugga’s monstrous growls. Moving from slow and ominous to breakneck speed, the band will have you swaying your head one moment, and slamming your mates in the pit the next. In Death have toured internationally across the US and Europe leaving the destruction of K.G.’s pounding drums, Dee Ruohonen’s bass that registers on the Richter scale, and the twin grooves of Brian Page and Rah Rah in their wake.

Witchgrinder are stalwarts of the Melbourne Metal scene, appealing to Metalheads and Goths alike with their particular Industrial-infused blend of Metal. Frontman Travis Everett is known to DJ across Melbourne’s heavy alternative clubs in addition to his charismatic live performances, keeping Witchgrinder front of mind. Fans of Rob Zombie and Terror Universal should sit up and take notice, as Rick Grimm and Andrew Rondinelli bring horror grooves to please all the musical gore hounds, amply supported by the pounding beats to bang your head to courtesy of Ryan Perillo. There aren’t too many genuine Industrial Metal bands in the Melbourne scene, but we sure as Hell have quality over quantity.
