It’s not often Australia sees a festival with a strong focus on Industrial Metal, but that’s exactly what you’re getting in a few weeks’ time with Darkcell‘s Psycho Circus! Hitting New South Wales and Queensland, this festival is full of stomping beats and fearsome aesthetics to please Metalheads and Goths alike. With Australia’s premiere Industrial Metal act at the helm, you can be sure this will be one of the landmark events of 2017. Here are five of the craziest acts you’ll see on the bills – and note, the line-ups of the two shows do vary!
COFFIN CAROUSEL (VIC)
Coffin Carousel bring a charismatic blend of Groove Metal and Horror Punk to the table, with a chugging riffs and hook-laden songs. The punk element is certainly strong, with a live performance focused on in-your-face authenticity with a swaggering looseness. At the same time, the classic horror elements to their lyrics and aesthetic provide a delightfully Gothic feel. The band fittingly released their first full-length album on Friday 13 October, so now is the perfect time to jump on the carousel!

Darkcell have made a name for themselves as one of Australia’s premier Industrial Metal acts, with horror aesthetics and heavy beats along the lines of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie. Frontman Jesse Dracman brings a blisteringly energetic live performance, such that the Queensland up-and-comers commanded respect by taking absolute control of the stage at the 2014 incarnation of the lamented Soundwave Festival. As the vaunted hosts of the Psycho Circus, you can bet Darkcell have something crazier than ever in store for punters this December.

Few Australian bands bring dark, heavy, Industrial beats in the style of Noveaux, and they have the support cred to prove it having played alongside such heavyweights as Grendel, Covenant, Clan of Xymox and Laeather Strip. If you like your dance beats dark and ominous in the style of Gothminister and Rammstein, Noveaux can get your party started. Aside from Industrial fury, the band also have a more downbeat, emotive side to please fans of the Gothic end of the electronic spectrum, from VNV Nation to Gary Numan. Noveaux are definitely one for the Rivetheads, but Metalheads shouldn’t shy away – these guys are definitely heavy.

TENSIONS ARISE (NSW)
As a band with the stated agenda of having fun while playing Metal, it’s no wonder Tensions Arise were chosen to support Anvil on their Australian tour last week, nor that they’re on such a high-energy bill with Darkcell, Noveaux and more! Fittingly, Tensions Arise can perhaps be best compared to another fun and compelling band, DevilDriver, with their intensity, speed and aggression. They may not have the Industrial beats of other bands in the Psycho Circus, but they’ll definitely get you moving in the pit.

THESE FOUR WALLS (QLD)
Originally formed in New Zealand, These Four Walls have made their way across the ditch to locate themselves on the Gold Coast. If you like the vibe of Prog, but can do without the jazz fusion odysseys; if you’re a fan of A Perfect Circle; or you’re looking for a heavier version of Muse, then These Four Walls are for you. With a chilled out approach to Metal and smooth, clean vocals, These Four Walls are among the most melodic bands in the Psycho Circus, but well deserving of a place with their beautiful songs.
