Looking for that final Melbourne Metal gig before you’re locked down for Christmas? Then BANG have got you covered on 23 December, when they’ll be hosting the Nightmare Before Christmas at 629 Bourke St. Never mind the tinsel and holly, this gig will be done up in ghoulishly garish fashion to please Jack Skellington himself. How’s that for humbug! And it will truly be a nightmare to remember, with four of Melbourne’s very best Metal bands on the line-up!
First cab off the rank is Triple Kill, who have been making an unbelievable impact on the Melbourne Metal scene for having been around such a short time. From humble beginnings, they’ve become tighter than a Christmas turkey’s arse (pre-stuffing), and are ready to melt faces with fast-paced Thrash Metal infused with a good dose of Aussie humour. That’s right – not only are these musos incredibly skilled, but their onstage antics will get even the grimmest of grinches chuckling. I defy you not to laugh during ‘Swarm,’ a mainstay of the band’s live set.
Next up are Primitive, who recently caused a stir with their new self-titled debut EP. They also recently played their first headlining show, so they are a band that is on the rise. In fact, these guys have been known to blow much more experienced bands off the stage when playing packed line-ups at the Bendigo Hotel, so underestimate them at your peril.
Speaking of experience, Harlott have it. Stalwarts of the Melbourne Thrash scene, Harlott have international clout, having both toured overseas and supported international bands at home. These guys are Australia’s answer to Bay Area Thrash, with a sound that could be considered a modern interpretation of the pioneering work of Slayer. Harlott combine deep, weighty subject matter with rough-around-the-edges humour, making for a compelling and energetic live show that never repeats itself, or repeats on you.
With the Bay Area sound covered, that brings us to Gothenburg, with the melodic Death Metal tradition more than ably handled by the mighty Orpheus Omega. One of the finest bands in Melbourne, Orpheus Omega have built a fan base that spreads over Australasia, and have one of the most prolific support records in the business. Undoubtedly this is partly because their talent and charisma can win over even the pickiest of Metalheads, be they fans of Wintersun, Lacuna Coil, Sirenia or At the Gates. Melodeath fans, take note: this is the very LAST time you will get a chance to see Orpheus Omega live before they disappear into frontman Chris Themelco’s Monolith Studios to record their new album. No doubt they’ll pull out a new track or two for this gig, and those that have been revealed so far are outstanding. These guys may yet outdo 2015’s Partum Vita Mortem – one of the finest albums of that year!
