This week in OVERDRIVE OZ, we take a look at the bands on the line-up for the inaugural Cove Events gig, to be held on February 9 at Richmond’s Central Club Hotel (tickets at the door)! Gig mastermind Varunia is an experienced figure behind the scenes in the Melbourne Goth and Metal scenes, as well as DJing on the decks of such events as The New Order, Club Sanguine and Ragnarok. She’s put together a diverse Metal line-up for this one, so let’s get to know them.
Catacombs are a melodic Death Metal band with a powerful sound that will have you headbanging from the get-go. With a full complement of instrumentation, including two guitarists – Mark Hamono and Ian Mather – alongside keyboardist Dan Liston, the band compose songs of dense instrumentation and epic scope. They already have two full-length albums under their belt, and have taken the opportunity to support Finnish Doom Metallers Moonsorrow on Australian soil. For this gig they will be debuting a sneak peak of a track from their upcoming EP Worldpyre, so take note! Catacombs are worthy headline to this crushing line-up.

Fornicatador aren’t on the bill for this gig, but they are worth mentioning as another band featuring the prolific Kama Way, frontwoman of Hexreign – who are on the bill, and whom we’ve covered previously in OVERDRIVE OZ. Way steps away from vocal duties for Fornicatador, instead focusing on bass duties. That doesn’t make this band any less savage however, as the gasmask-clad four-piece rip out some of the most devastatingly brutal Black Metal in Melbourne. Fornicatador know extremity, and push it to its limits.

HAUNTED STEEL (VIC)
Remember when I told you regional Victoria is producing some excellent Metal outside of Melbourne? Haunted Steel are an example of that, with their thundering Heavy Metal sound blasting out of Ballarat. There are definite classic stylings to their music, combined with tortured Death Metal-style vocals courtesy of Liam Tobin. This four-piece are still in the early days of their career, but definitely one to watch.

Another prolific performer in the Melbourne Metal scene is Zebadee Scott, who is not only the drummer for Myridian, Adamus Exul and Aquilus (seriously, are there clones of this guy?), but also the frontman for Omnipresence. Omnipresence are a new venture on the scene, having played only two shows so far. That makes it a perfect time and jump on board to be part of this new exploration of darkness from the beginning. Discover something new but with line-up pedigree!

There are still relatively few women who perform mind-blowingly brutal Death Metal growls, but Spyke Jagerkrieg is one of them. In fact, Jagerkrieg is one of the fiercest vocalists in Melbourne, with a charismatic and dominant presence that stirs the pit into a maelstrom. Scaphis have made their presence felt all over Australia, including an appearance at the Northern Territory’s Blacken Open Air Festival. With their name a reference to a Persian torture method, it’s no surprise there are Grind elements to Scaphis’ sound as well, though their Death Metal leanings produce more melodic music than, say, Napalm Death or Cannibal Corpse.
