Every year, headbangers from around the world unite in the German town of Wacken, to attend one of the most publically recognised Metal Festivals in the world, and with good reason. In its near 28 year run, there hasn’t been one Wacken Open Air festival that has disappointed, showcasing some of the biggest metal acts in music history. Need further convincing that Wacken Open Air is a must attend event? How about I give you five?

  1. They ALWAYS boast killer line-ups!

No, seriously! There hasn’t been a Wacken Open Air Festival that has disappointed any fan in the form of who’s performing on the bill. Boasting acts in the past such as Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Accept, Rob Zombie, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Twisted Sister, Foreigner, Slayer, Bullet For My Valentine, Rammstein, and Nightwish, every festival promises to deliver absolute brilliance. How could names such as these not get you excited?

  1. The atmosphere is absolutely electric!

Altogether, near 85,000 visitors will flock to the “Wacken Holy Land” throughout the run of the festival, in hopes of catching a glimpse of their favourite acts. Contrast to its size, it’s always possessed somewhat of a cozy atmosphere. Even though most people are donning uniforms depicting skulls, covered in spikes and inverted crossed, they are some of the most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. When it comes to us Metalheads, we are a united front. Together we stand, together we fall. This is the place you want to be when it comes to the appreciation of Heavy Metal music!

  1. Opportunities to perform aren’t limited to big name bands!

Some 120 odd performers will take to the stage during Wacken’s duration. The organizers of the event also include in this number new talents in their program; the Wacken Foundation invites newcomers from all over the world to compete in competitions to earn a spot on the line-up that given year. The Metal Battle competition includes bands from upwards of 28 countries, including headbangers from China to the Caribbean. Everyone can find common grounds at Wacken, one of the most multi-culturally diverse festivals. Tell me one festival that gives small up-and-comers the chance to shred in front of 80 thousand screaming metal fans?

  1. You can rock out, while you camp out!

You heard me correctly! Being in Australia, we don’t have big name festivals like this where bands perform over a certain amount of days and nights, allowing us to camp out underneath the stars while heavy metal tunes act as lullabies to lull some of us to sleep. We don’t have events of this magnitude where a band like Judas Priest could have tens of thousands of people going absolutely nuts, while you’re casually making your mates some hamburgers and drinking beers. It’s such a unique experience; one that Australians are dying to have brought over to our great land. In the meantime, this is one of the main reasons why packing your bags and making the trip to Wacken needs to be on your Heavy Metal Bucketlist!

  1. EVERY Year keeps getting better and better!

You’d think with such a festival, you’d eventually run into a brick wall in the way of repeating things that have happened in the past. Not only does Wacken Open Air avoid this, every year is unique and completely original, so you’re always guaranteed a different experience each time their stages are set up. Did I mention earlier that Wacken last year created their own Beer pipeline? Did I also mention that Wacken Open Air is so revered by people in the music industry that bands like Metallica are eagerly awaiting chances to headline bills, and perform in front of the masses? If not Wacken Open Air 2018, make sure a future Wacken Open Air is on the cards – hell, I haven’t been to one in my lifetime, but I’ve now convinced myself that it’s something that needs to be on my Bucketlist!
