OVERDRIVE OZ has had an unexpected hiatus as work piled up following the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise, but the column is now back in action! There are still plenty of amazing bands from right here in Australia to cover, so you don’t need to jump on an international cruise – hell, you barely need to leave your backyard! So let’s check out some more of the best.

A BREACH OF SILENCE (QLD)

A Breach of Silence present a unique sound that combines some of the catchiest elements of the last 20 years of Metal. With a vocal approach and song structure that captures nostalgia for early 2000s Nu Metal, but a compositional style that weaves in subtle electronic elements and slight nods to Prog, they also draw on modern Metal developments of the last decade. Rhys Flannery’s vocals are powerful but very easy to listen to, almost soothing in fact. Guitarists Mat Cosgrove and Kerrod Debelstein drive a fairly traditional song structure, but also judiciously drop melodic guitar solos without going over the top. This self-styled “Powercore” band is excellent to chill out or bang your head to – whatever your mood!

DAY BREAK (SA)

Another intensely unique band, the genre-defying Day Break could perhaps be described as psychedelic, brutal punk. Marcus Passey and Anthony Visser’s guitars are both minimalist and brutal, creating a haunting, dystopian sonic landscape. This bleak atmosphere is complemented by Passey’s vocals which seem to draw primarily from Deathcore; however, there are also points where Day Break draw on some of the rap-infused elements of third wave punk. Day Break create music that is much more unsettling than the genres that seem to have influenced them, forging their own musical path that will no doubt inspire others in years to come.

EARTH ROT (WA)

Do you long for the days when Death Metal was delivered in short, sharp bursts of face-punching brutality? Well, that’s exactly what you’ll get with Earth Rot. A striking balance between traditional and melodic Death Metal, Earth Rot provide quality musicianship with every member making a high-quality mark on the music. The drums are intense and varied, with the guitars hammering just as hard through the riffs, then launching into intricate solos. Earth Rot’s vocals also have surprising depths not always encountered in straight-up growls. Earth Rot are an excellent addition to the Australian Death Metal canon.

THE MIS-MADE (NSW)

Crunchy rock guitars combine with enchanting vocal harmonies and sardonic attitude with The Mis-Made. More melodic than grunge, perhaps more subtle than punk, these rock tunes are nevertheless powered by deep passion and drive. Vocalist and lead guitarist Jess Finlayson fronts the band as an absolute powerhouse, while bassist Rexy Yasa and drummer Nerida Wu keep the engine moving. With a number of singles and EPs already unleashed on the world, The Mis-Made will soon be releasing their debut full-length album that’s sure to set the bar even higher for hard-edged melodic rock.

VOID OF VISION (VIC)

An absolute freight train of heaviness rolls in with the Metalcore stylings of Void of Vision. James Mckendrick and Mitch Fairlie’s seismic guitars drive the assault, with Jack Bergin’s irrepressible vocals front and centre. Void of Vision are at the top of their game with a slew of live performances, including headlining Invasion Fest, playing the coveted main stage at the Unify Festival, and support slots with Miss May I and Story of the Year. Somehow they also managed to crank out the surprise EP ‘Disturbia’ last year, so get onto these guys before they leave you behind!
