The landscape of Australian heavy music is an ever-changing tapestry. Line-ups change, bands come and go, but if there’s one thing that remains, it’s the awesomeness. Dedicate yourself to the scene for long enough, and you’ll start to recognise the same friendly and familiar faces, on stage or off. Buy someone a beer, and you just might hear about their latest gig or EP. Here are some more bands you can catch around your local scene.
BORIS THE BLADE (VIC)
Rapid-fire and technical drumming is the first hallmark of Boris the Blade, signalling to the listener that this band takes a modern and compelling approach to Death Metal. With neither the deep Southern roots of Lamb of God, nor the chill of Swedish melodeath, Boris the Blade instead take a harsh, innovative but not Prog approach that is at its core simply Australian. The Australian advances in Death Metal add depth to what can be quite a Spartan atmosphere, presenting hard edges and the most brutal of vocals with songs that while having melodic elements, and in the end unrelentingly aggressive. Boris the Blade are at the forefront of this Australian approach.

DREAMERS CRIME (NSW)
Another band taking a modern approach to a classic genre, Dreamers Crime adopt some vocal stylings from more mainstream and contemporary music, then unleash harsh and uncompromising growls at strategic moments. Dreamers Crime create melodic Metal with plenty of hooks but also enough twists to keep the listening guessing, bringing together what is overall an incredibly satisfying sound. Soulful moments of beauty weave through the band’s heaviness and aggression, making for a diverse experience even within a single song. These guys are a fantastic unit with no showboating – just great tunes.

THE FUROR (NSW)
The Furor immediately stand out with their almost Industrial Metal approach to drums courtesy of Dizazter, with their sound somewhat reminiscent of early Ministry until the screams and blast beats come in. From that point it’s all barely controlled, frenetic Death Metal. Guitarist Hellhound somehow keeps up with the galloping pace, but what’s even more impressive is that in the midst of all that skins-pounding fury, Dizazter actually manages to perform vocals as well. Hellhound’s solos certainly are diabolical however, and overall this is a band who have doubtless climbed from the deepest pits. The Furor are a band not to be trifled with.

Lavidius present top-notch and straightforward Death-infused Thrash, very much in the style of Lamb of God. There’s a real groove to these rollicking tunes, with crushing riffs riding the wave of Sebastian Desmarias’ bass juggernaut. You’d almost swear it was Randy Blythe himself providing vocals, but that’s the voice of Nathan Stiffel you hear. Meanwhile, guitarists Jon Shedden and Marcus Glover, along with drummer Ben Bowen, keep things tight and melodically heavy with their balancing act between genres. Shedden and Glover really shine in the instrumental sections, with powerful and emotive solos that bring Arch Enemy to mind.

Mindsnare are fast-paced and in your face, with smashing riffs and irrepressible drums. The pounding of the skins is almost unbelievably fast, while the bass presence is strong and memorable. It would be remiss not to mention the shredding guitar work, which keeps up with the massive drums with aplomb. Vocals are harsh and incisive, cutting through any waste and ephemera with some of the punchiest songs you’re likely to hear. If you want to get your head banging in record time, Mindsnare are where it’s at!
