With a long weekend almost behind us, and perhaps a landslide of chocolate having overwhelmed you yesterday, you may well be looking for a way to chill out this Monday, nursing a hangover, Easter egg food baby, or both! Thankfully there are plenty of Aussie bands ready to help you out, as we continue our deep dive into OVERDRIVE’s Heaviest 100.
AWAKEN SOLACE (QLD)
For lovers of dramatic, symphonic Power Metal, Awaken Solace are a majestic and enchanting experience. Maree Nipperess’s vocals range from the lilting to the powerful, fittingly accompanied by the synth and orchestral compositions of Robert Russell. Awaken Solace pull out all the stops to weave their fantastical landscapes, with ample use of choral parts alongside heavy riffs and brilliant solos courtesy of guitarist Elspeth Johnson. If you’re captivated by the likes of Nightwish and Epica, then Awaken Solace is Queensland’s answer for you.

Modern punk-infused rock is the purview of Grenadiers, with Jesse’s chunky riffs and charismatic vocals leading the sound. Jimmy tears up the tracks with unrelenting energy in his drumming, while it’s all smoothed out at the bottom end through Phil’s bass. There’s plenty about Grenadiers that nods to Summer rock ‘n’ roll stylings, but there’s also an edge to the sound that signals there’s more to this band than the typical surf and hot rods.

JAMES NORBERT IVANYI (NSW)
James Norbert Ivanyi leads an instrumental Progressive Metal band that picks up many cues from Porcupine Tree and the more Progressive works of Opeth. Far from the Death Metal end of the Progressive spectrum, the band rather takes on the haunting and unsettling synth elements, alongside basslines that are fascinating and experimental in their own right courtesy of Liam Horgan. It’s Ivanyi’s guitar work that is the focus however, and he absolutely owns the label of one of Australia’s greatest players. Studio drummer David Horgan is also an irreplaceable part of the team, keeping up with the complex compositions and adding his own layers of mind-bending precision with aplomb.

NIGHT LEGION (QLD)
Hailing from the heavy side of Power Metal, Night Legion will be very pleasing to fans of Iced Earth and Jag Panzer, along with those who like an injection of the 80s into their Metal. The reverb-laden Power Metal vocals bring to mind the classics of Yngwie Malmsteen or even Winter Rose, though the guitars are pure, straightforward Metal. For 80s nostalgia combined with quality heaviness, you need not look further than Night Legion. The band have a great sense of melodic Metal, while at the same time being able to launch into devastating power, showing off their diverse talents.

Troldhaugen are quite simply a band who need to be seen to be believed. With crunchy Metal riffs infusing avant-garde cabaret, funky beats and a truly devilish sense of humour, there’s nothing quite like them out there. Despite being so incredibly weird, the band actually pump out some incredibly catchy tunes, and combined with their charismatic and engaging performance, put on an unforgettably stellar live show. If anyone, they are perhaps comparable to another of Australia’s weirdest heavy acts, Beast Impalor, as well as perhaps Devin Townsend. To try to compare Troldhaugen to any other act though ultimately belies the fact that they are truly unique, and a band everyone should experience at least once.
