It’s been a long time in getting here, but today marks the final edition of OVERDRIVE OZ that will focus on the Heaviest 100 – as all 100 bands have now been covered in this column since its inception! Of course, there are plenty more excellent bands to focus our lens on over the coming weeks, so be sure to keep checking back to find out which Aussie Metal bands you should be looking out for!

CLOWNS (VIC)

Clowns guitarists Rod Goon and Will Robinson provide sunny riffs over Jake Laderman’s pumping drumbeats, and the pure, traditional punk vocals of Stevie Williams. The band doesn’t quite have the aggression of old-school 70s punk, but certainly nods to that tradition far more than punk from the 90s or beyond. If anything though they seem to be more of a party band, with even Hanny J’s bass thumping out the catchy melodies. Add some attitude to your next gathering with these guys, and nobody will be disappointed!

HOLLOW WORLD (VIC)

Hollow World belt out some of the heaviest traditional Death Metal to come from the land Down Under. To describe Michael Hodgson’s rapid-fire drums as a force to be reckoned with is clearly an understatement, while guitarists Michael Truscott and Theo Goslett weave a perfect unity of Metal melody and absolutely crushing riffs. One of the most brutal aspects of the band however is Ben Roberts’ vocals, a demonic attack that brings the whole package together and while Josh Hynes’ bass pushes the music inexorably forward. The band move from a breakneck pace to the low, stomping juggernaut of Metal throughout their songs, never giving the listener a moment’s pause.

KING PARROT (VIC)

King Parrot are, quite simply, one of the most brutal bands ever to hail from Australian shores. With a breakneck assault that draws on Grind and the absolute filthiest in Death Metal, King Parrot frontman Youngy will literally get in your face as a regular part of the show – to the point where he’s actually become the star of a meme relating to Australian Death Metal. As Aussie as they come, the band have come to the attention of no less a Metal luminary than ex-Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo, who invited the band to tour the US alongside Down. There’s barely an Australian festival stage King Parrot haven’t disgraced, so you’re sure to see more of them in the future!

NORTHLANE (NSW)

Northlane are one of Australia’s foremost names in the Hardcore / Post-Metal scene, and with good reason. Though the band exemplify many of the tropes of the genre, such as strong and distinctive basslines courtesy of Alex Milovic, a blend of beautiful clean and fiendishly aggressive harsh vocals from Marcus Bridge, lending themselves to heavy verses and soaringly melodic choruses, the band present these with such aplomb that the busy genre seems fresh and original all over again. There is an unmistakeable “next level” feel to Northlane’s music, and the emotional range they can achieve in just a few short minutes is staggering. The mark this band makes on the genre will be felt for a long time to come.

OCEAN GROVE (VIC)

Ocean Grove are a truly avant-garde band within the punk genre, with weird electronic elements and a grooving bassline courtesy of Dale Tanner – also the clean vocalist – forming the backdrop for a combination of punk, Hardcore and even rap vocal dynamics, with harsh vocals provided by Luke Holmes. Jimmy Hall and Matthew Henley provide deeply heavy riffs that certainly go beyond the punk genre, but steer more towards the Metal than the Hardcore. In fact, the generic fusion moves way too fast to ever pin this band down, and that’s a great thing – there’s a bit of everything, and certainly something to please just about every fan of heavy music who likes to push traditional sonic boundaries.
