The dark days and long nights of Winter will soon be upon us in earnest, and while that means that international tours will be few and far between as bands do the rounds of the US and European Summer festivals, there will be more local gigs bubbling to the surface than ever in the Land Down Under. One of the greatest celebrations of Aussie talent will be the Legions of Steel Festival set to take place on Saturday 2 June at Melbourne’s Max Watt’s. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the festival, which organisers Espionage Bookings will be celebrating with a DVD recording! It’s going to be a wild night, so make sure you’re there to see all the action, and maybe make it onto the DVD in the process! Here are just some of the amazing bands you’ll be able to check out.

DREADNAUGHT (VIC)

With a career spanning over 25 years, Dreadnaught are an absolute mainstay of Melbourne’s Metal scene. Dreadnaught make a virtue of pure, straightforward heaviness, drawing on classic influences of Thrash and Death Metal while also incorporating more melodic elements of Nu Metal – ultimately creating a sound that is at once unique and distinctive, yet also familiar to fans from across the spectrum of Metal’s subgenres. The band’s guitar-work is top-notch, with soaring solos and crushing riffs creating waves of compelling musicality while powerfully aggressive vocals keep the songs keenly focused. Dreadnaught are a band who show the quality and versatility that can only be derived from experience.

ELM STREET (VIC)

With 15 years on the scene, Elm Street are no newbies either. Elm Street bring a disciplined and mature approach to creating rollicking Metal powerhouses, drawing on the heavier end of Power Metal that might bring to mind bands such as Jag Panzer and Helloween, and indeed Iced Earth who Elm Street supported on their last Australian tour. The uplifting and triumphant elements of Power Metal are presented with a harsh edge that touches more than a little on Thrash, as approach that seems to go over eminently well with Australian audiences, so is sure to get the crowd moving and headbanging at Legions of Steel!

EYEFEAR (VIC)

One of the great stalwarts of Australian Power Metal, Eyefear went through a period of hibernation as they negotiated the process of finding a new vocalist to take them forward. It’s been a few months now since Riccardo Mecchi was announced and welcomed to the band with a debut live show, and ever since fans have been itching for more. That will come at Legions of Steel as Eyefear unleash their dark, bombastic and symphonic Power Metal tunes, including perhaps one or two from their upcoming album. With a new era about to be unleashed in earnest, Eyefear are once again a Melbourne band to watch.

LETHAL VENDETTA (NSW)

When it comes to Thrash, it doesn’t get much heavier than Lethal Vendetta. Ben Drennan’s riffs practically register on the Richter scale, while Brent Logan emits attitude that sits somewhere between Joey Belladonna and Tom Araya. Lethal Vendetta’s tunes are harsh, dirty and primed for headbanging and mosh pits. Drummer Morris Markovic sets a formidable precedent of power, while Liam Donelan adds an extra injection of speed with his lead guitars. Jay Burnham’s bass provides a hellish bottom end, rounding out a package that is sure to set Legions of Steel aflame.

PEGAZUS (VIC)

Pegazus are without doubt one of the bands working hardest to the keep the studded-leather 80s alive in Australian Metal. Joe Stanley brings the Rob Halford approach to vocals to absolute fruition, while Johnny Stoj’s guitar reminds the listener that for all of Metal’s storied 50-year history, it finds its roots in rock ‘n’ roll. Legions of Steel may be all about the Metal, but Pegazus show us that rock is far from dead. Matt Ambrose’s bass keeps things ticking over in the band’s engine room, with Andrew Sharp bringing full-throttle combustion on the drums. A Pegazus show is nothing short of a horn-throwing party every time!
