Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middleton has teamed up with Davey Lane for his third solo album Tides and ‘Just Let Me Go’ suggests the two artists are a pretty damn good match. It’s a taut, snappy piece of slick indie rock that pulls together an assortment of luscious sounds – everything here sounds immaculate. – Double J
It is both a tide coming in, and going out for someone, somewhere, this album reflects that. – Darren Middleton
Aussie guitarist and songwriter Darren Middleton today delivers yet another thumping track with the release of ‘Some People’, the second offering from his forthcoming studio album TIDES out September 21 via Ditto.
The latest single, which premiered on Triple M’s Homegrown, features the gorgeous guest vocals of Kelly Lane (Skipping Girl Vinegar) echoing over the top of a rolling backline and lashing beat.
Darren says the single explores the idea “trying to find yourself in today’s world of immersion and oversharing. It talks about how precarious it can be to open yourself up, for people to dissect, so you keep a little of yourself for safekeeping”
The clip, featuring Middleton & Lane, was created by Melbourne-based director Nathan Dalton: “Being a fan of Darren’s music since the early Powderfinger days, it was a dream come true collaborating with him on this music video. The lyrics to Some People talk of how people change over time, but rather than the visuals reflecting this, we chose to tell an abstract story of Darren navigating through various worlds, singing and playing while he searches for a mystical woman.
The music video was shot with the support of Fujifilm over two and half days, predominantly in the Warburton area and our studio at Oh Yeah Wow in Brunswick”

To coincide with the release of TIDES, fans in Melbourne, Brisbane & Sydney get the chance to experience the album fleshed out for the very first time as Darren sets off on an east coast tour this October. Performing tracks off the new album, he will also be throwing in a couple of crowd favourites from his extensive back catalogue for a rollicking good time.
For TIDES he has enlisted an all-star Aussie line-up including Vika and Linda Bull and Kelly Lane on backing vocals, with Graeme Pogson (The Bamboos), Luke Hodgson (Meg Mac), Xani Kolac and Louis Macklin (JET) handling the rhythm of the album, TIDES is a lot grittier than past releases with a sound that is organically shaped and reminiscent of a different era.
Searching for the perfect co-producer, Middleton teamed up with Davey Lane (You Am I) to help navigate the album in a new direction, touching on the purpose of making music to connect, to build and share bridges. Recorded straight to tape, in full takes, to capture evolution in the music, the error and the brilliance, finally bought together in the mix by inimitable producer Steve Schram (Paul Kelly, San Cisco, Cat Empire).
The songs on TIDES tell tales of confrontation and courage, the innate and inimitable power of music to cross language barriers, time zones, geographical distance and generations to build, shape and share. Highlighting the inevitability of change. TIDES is not perfect… it’s human.
