This week in our ongoing scan of the upcoming national shenanigans of Metal United Down Under, OVERDRIVE OZ takes a deep dive into the bands who will be playing the Bendigo show at the famed MusicMan Megastore. While largely coming from a Victorian base, this line-up does include a few interstate standouts, one of whom we cover in this edition. There’s more than enough talent right here in Victoria to fill the bill of course, so expect only the best to be brought out for one of Australia’s heaviest regions!

ABREACT (VIC)

Lee Chatterton brings nasty, crunching riffs to the forefront of Abreact’s uncompromising, violently heavy sound. This is augmented admirably by Josh Cahill’s harsh vocals. While there is undoubtedly a Thrash influence to Abreact’s sound, there is also a touch of Meshuggah in Chris Hayden’s distinctive bass plunge, and overall the band do push into some Post-Metal, Nu Metal and even some distantly Prog influences to forge a sound that is uniquely their own in the busy, heavy landscape.

AS I DESTRUCT (SA)

As I Destruct are a chugging juggernaut of unrelenting Death Metal heaviness, with the onslaught led by the furious guitar work of Matthew Marotti and Mathew Adams. Luke Dietrich’s harsh vocals are absolutely crushing, while the breakneck drumming of Tony Coota is permanently set to decimate everything in its path with his seismic blasts. One might compare As I Destruct’s sound to Arch Enemy, particularly at the extreme end of the latter’s heaviness. While there are some melodic elements to As I Destruct’s sound, particularly in Marotti and Adams’ guitars, they are without a doubt primarily in the mode of brutality.

THE ASCENDED (VIC)

The Ascended deliver pure, fast-paced Death Metal that is guaranteed to get the pit started in record time. It’s no exaggeration to describe drummer Jacob Mailes as an absolute beast, and the same description can be applied to vocalist Mat Wale in accordance with his harsh vocals. Beyond the heavy riffs, Wale and Corey Verhaegh reveal their strength as guitarists with compelling leads. The Ascended are versatile in their talents, but their home is of course where the heaviness is; and while they may drift to slower or more melodic sections, speed and crunchiness are never too far away.

CALLOUS (VIC)

Don’t be fooled by Callous having a member with the same name as Abreact’s Josh Cahill like we were for a moment there! Instead, enjoy Callous’ monstrous frontman Jacob Clark, vanguard of the band’s out-and-out brutal approach drawing on classic Death Metal and Grindcore to flesh out their sound, so to speak. Accordingly, they also don’t sound as “produced” as some of the other bands on the bill, nodding to the early days of slightly fuzzy sounding Death Metal. That being said, the talents of Josh Cahill and lead guitarist Matt Choomah Tresize are more than admirably displayed for a raucous and enjoyable experience.

ORDER OF TORMENT (VIC)

Another soundtrack to pure slaughter, Order of Torment push the boundaries of ferocious brutality in their fast-paced Death Metal assault. Their style is very much of the old school, with harsh vocal declarations and breakneck drums. The guitars weave through heavy riffs and circuitous Death Metal leads, with the whole experience never relaxing for a moment even as the pace shifts from screaming speed to lumbering heaviness. Order of Torment leave no stone unturned in their search for the absolute depths of heaviness.
