Sydney-siders! Metal United Down Under haven’t forgotten about you. This week in our ongoing coverage of MUDU, we make our way back to a capital city to see what Sydney has to offer. All the bands here hail from either the iconic Sydney itself, or surrounding New South Wales. These bands and more are going to absolutely smash the Tattersalls Hotel in Sydney, so it’s time you find out who’s going to be delivering the arse-kicking directly to you.

BE FACED (NSW)

Be Faced deliver a twisted groove that is reminiscent of Pantera, but also carries with it the hyper-charged aggression of thrash metal and even a touch of classic death metal when monstrous growls occasionally emerge. The main vocal style however is more the raging sneer of punk-influenced thrash, with a strong blend of heavy genres emerging overall. The interplay between heavy riffing and powerful, yet marvellously timed and disciplined drums is a highlight of Be Faced’s sound, showing a mature approach and tight expression of their chosen style of metal.

BY THE HORNS (NSW)

Fast and heavy, but with a no frills approach, By the Horns present a sound that is something like a stripped-back version of Slipknot, with a particular injection of Lamb of God’s style in Scott Tunnard’s vocals. The emphasis on Tim Bennetts’s bass sound is a standout element of By the Horns, as it’s T. Bennetts’s groove that often really drives their tracks. That’s not to take away from guitarists Michael Bennetts and Mark Tuchin however, who certainly carry the rhythm with aplomb. Nevertheless, it is T. Bennetts who even seems to bring something of a Rage Against the Machine sound into the mix, and overall the blend of influences creates a uniquely intriguing sound.

DIMINISH THE GODS (NSW)

Diminish the Gods deliver deep and heavy death metal, with a focus on the mesmerising lead guitar work of James Cecchetelli. Interestingly, while Diminish the Gods’ sound nods more towards classic death metal, Cecchetelli’s solos seem to draw not only from the more melodic death metal of Gothenburg, but also more modern post-metal approaches, and even more diverse shredding influences like Yngwie Malmsteen. Of course, he is supported by powerful contributions across the band, from the unique timing of drummer Jake Shaw, to the unrelentingly harsh vocals of Simon Strelein. Overall, a satisfyingly complex sound.

ENTER 6 (NSW)

Enter 6 have a classic, thrash-inspired death metal sound showcasing massive drumbeats, ferocious vocals, and of course crushingly heavy riffs. The whole package is fast-paced and headbang-ready, with the guitars evoking a warlike, machine gun sound, and the bass a seismic aftershock. The powerful riffs are the primary driver of the Enter 6 sound, though the vocals are certainly engaging as well. Overall, Enter 6 are surprisingly impactful band for a three-piece, and will be sure to turn plenty of windmilling heads at Metal United Down Under.

INFINITE ILLUSION (NSW)

Though one of the younger bands on the bill, Infinite Illusion will bring more than enough fury to satisfy the metalheads of Sydney. With a sound led by riffs and the heavy presence of Jack Kershaw’s bass, Infinite Illusion are clearly influenced by bands of the ilk of Meshuggah, though Sam Waterhouse and Sean Dalton’s guitars have a tendency to explore more melodic territory. The Meshuggah influence remains clear in Dalton’s vocals however, almost as deep and heavy as Kershaw’s bass. Infinite Illusion explore the depths of what it means to be heavy, while at the same time constructing uplifting riffs that ensure there is more to their sound.
