Following on from the massive success of last year’s inaugural event, Melbourne’s iconic Cherry Bar brings you Amped Festival II! Located in the world-famous AC/DC Lane, the rock ‘n’ roll bar that is an absolute Melbourne institution brings you a varied line-up stacked to the rafters with Thrash, Prog, Speed Metal and more. If you’re in Melbourne on October 6th, there’s really no excuse not to be there, as not only is there something for everyone on this massive line-up, but you’re pretty much guaranteed to discover some new music as well, whether it’s from Melbourne locals or the interstate friends scattered throughout the day.
EL COLOSSO (VIC)
El Colosso bring a crisp, heavy expression to the kind of rock and proto-Metal promulgated in the 70s by the likes of Black Sabbath and even hark back to Jimi Hendrix, while avoiding the fuzz and muddiness that tends to be typical of the related Stoner genre. There is a refreshing clarity to El Colosso’s sound that sets them apart from bands that might otherwise be considered similar. Benny James provides lovely clean guitar tones, with soaring solos that beautifully complement the crunchy, rocking riffs. Drummer Peter Hayden is also a stand-out contributor, with accomplished beats and fills that really flesh out El Colosso’s songs.

Figures bring a Progressive sensibility to alternative rock in a similar vein to modern Anathema, with expansive instrumentation and soulful vocals from Mark Tronson. While there is an obvious Alt-Brit-Rock influence in the DNA of the band, there is also something uniquely Australian in their expression of the genre – so it’s no wonder they’re an absolute Melbourne favourite. Figures embody the ethos of “as above, so below,” as they introduce emotive strains on both a cosmic and deeply personal level.

Headbore find themselves reaching across various Metal subgenres for an impressively integrated sound. While there are some undeniably Thrash roots to Headbore’s music, they also draw on traditional Heavy Metal as well as taking from melodic Death Metal in Adam Fisher’s harsh vocals. The dual guitar team of Luke Fisher and Chris Ward bring devastating talent in both the riffs and leads, bringing to mind the likes of Jag Panzer and the heavier offerings of Iced Earth. Overall Headbore’s style expresses a deep knowledge and wide taste in Metal that comes together exceptionally well.

KILL : DEATH : RATIO (VIC)
Anarion may be gone, but the melodic Metal stylings of Kill : Death : Ratio have arisen in their place. Vocalist and guitarist Riccardo Mecchi, now also frontman of Symphonic Power Metallers Eyefear, is nothing short of compelling. Mecchi could be compared to the stunning Stu Block of Iced Earth, while the band as a whole present an uplifting approach to Metal that would be at home on any Australian festival stage. Not to be outshone is lead guitarist Richard Vella, a key contributor to the sheer joy and sense of heroism that emerges from the Power Metal elements of Kill : Death : Ratio’s sound.

Meshiaak are characterised by the deep power and drama of their music, with crushing melodic Death Metal riffs and Danny Camilleri’s harsh vocals that switch between haunting and powerfully aggressive. There is something truly epic about the sonic landscapes described by Camilleri and lead guitarist Dean Wells, and this is only enhanced by their wonderful vocal harmonies. The sheer scope is Meshiaak’s sound is almost daunting, making for a captivating and hypnotic experience. Certainly their guitar work is exemplary, and it’s no wonder Meshiaak have shared the stage with the likes of Overkill and Destruction.
