As 2019 kicks off, Lajon Witherspoon and the rest of Sevendust show no signs of slowing down; after having released their twelfth album “All I See Is War” last year, Australia will be experiencing the full assault as they continue to see war all around the world!
Getting to speak with Witherspoon before the upcoming April tour, he was quick to excitedly point out “I’m loading gear up and getting ready to go out on tour, so it’s really cool to get to talk with you from my own house!”, before turning the topic of conversation towards the upcoming trip:
“I can’t wait to get back to Australia; are you kidding me? This is just wow…how exciting! When I said we were going to come back and it wouldn’t take a million years; I can’t believe we’re coming back in April and it’s just crazy! It’s something I’ve been really looking forward to and I mean it from the bottom of my heart. We have mates who come from Australia to hang out; not for one show but for a week or so, as they’re on holiday. It’s just an incredible experience for me, because as a young man I always wanted to get over there as much as I could. Now that I get to come back as often as I do and visit family, it means the world to me!”
When asked about his favourite song(s) to perform from ‘All I See Is War’, Witherspoon was quick to express that “I like all the songs! Dirty is a very good driving song, as it was one of the first songs we put together for ‘All I See Is War’ and it really set the tone for the entire album. It’s going to be hard to put together a set, as there are so many songs that I feel I want to jam (laughs), but I can tell you we won’t be letting any of you down!”
Talking about the doors that have opened up for the band since last year’s release, Witherspoon was very professional when explaining “we recently went back to the UK for the first time in about ten years and that was just crazy! It was just an incredible experience to take our buddies All That Remains to open for us and man, it was just great. It was an opening that we never expected to have happen again; I don’t want to throw anyone under the bus, but the team we had just wasn’t capable. But now we have the right people behind us who know what’s going on and they know what avenues we need to be taken down!”
Witherspoon took a step back from the whirlwind that ‘All I See Is War’ has been creating, to talk about what fuels the band and motivates them to keep creating new music/travelling around the world for the last 21 years:
“At the end of the day, we’ve been blessed to stay together for this long, to love each other and still be excited to create music or touring after all these years! The thing that keeps us together the most is the beautiful family we’ve built that are supporting us, as they’ve kept us touring and we signed a record deal; I mean, I forgot they signed bands anymore” before letting out another chuckle. Witherspoon then explained further how “even though we’ve been doing it for so long, it’s exciting to jam music around the world and have people singing it back to you. Plus after the show, I get to make new family, hear new stories and learn something about a town that I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t walk into the place!”
Delivering a rare insight into his personal life, Witherspoon quips “the guys call me a hoarder, but I call myself a man-tiquer; I like antiques and picking up different things to bring home. I mean, you should see the bar I’m walking around in, as it contains stuff from everywhere! There’s nothing I love more than walking through a city, randomly stumbling down some hidden pathway and finding the oldest something in a city…if anyone has anywhere they think I should check out, please don’t hesitate to let me know” before delivering his final message to Australian fans:
“In case you can’t tell, I’m really excited to come back because the energy is contagious; when I get there I already don’t want to leave! I just look forward to not only jamming and having a good time but to talk, catch up after the show and see everyone again.”
