EP Review: Epica – The Solace System

Epica’s latest EP, The Solace System, contains six tracks that were recorded during the sessions for their most recent full-length album, The Holographic Principle. Though these tracks were not considered the best fit for the album, they take the faster, heavier Epica we were introduced to in that album to even further extremes. Isaac Delahaye’s guitar solos are stronger and more intricate than ever, while Arien van Weesenbeek earns his nickname of “The Beast” ever more fully. The EP opens with John Williams-esque symphonic grandeur in the titular The Solace System. The track is heavy and pumping, with the...

Album Review: Marty Friedman – Wall Of Sound

Marty Friedman’s latest solo album, Wall of Sound, certainly lives up to its name. Entirely instrumental with the exception of ‘Something to Fight’ featuring Shining’s Jorgan Munkeby on vocals, one of the most impressive aspects of the album is that every track is entirely individual, each one taking the listener on a unique journey. That being said, the opening track ‘Self Pollution’ does an excellent job of setting up the listener’s expectations for the album. It starts out hypnotic and heavy, leading into massive drums and frenzied guitar work that would easily fit into a 2000s Dream Theater epic....

“So just, thanks so much for everybody’s support, you bunch of flaming galahs.” – An Interview with CRADLE OF FILTH’s Dani Filth

Cradle of Filth return in September with their powerful new album, Cryptoriana: The Seductiveness of Decay. The first taste released to the fans recently was the exquisitely lush music video, ‘Heartbreak and Séance’. Vocalist and lyricist Dani Filth says of the video, “The director of the video is the same artist as we used for Hammer of the Witches, which is our previous album. His name is Arthur Berzinsh. He’s a Latvian contemporary artist and he’s super-talented, and I found out he’s a video director as well. So as a band we decided it would be prolific if we...

“In true Acolyte form, our album’s going to be short because they’re all epics. “- An Interview with ACOLYTE’s Morgan Leigh-Brown

Acolyte is a Melbourne band who has been kicking innumerable goals of late, their most recent being the spellbinding video for Space and Time. Frontwoman Morgan–Leigh Brown has a lot to say about putting it all together. “I loved the experience of making ‘Space and Time’ because each time we’ve made a movie, I’ve gotten a bit more involved and learnt a bit more about the art itself. So when it came to doing this one, we knew that we were going to release this in full as the third, as long as our music was in a place...

“In Metal music many lyrics are very negative, with Epica we aim to show both sides of the coin.” – An Interview with EPICA’s Mark Jansen

Dutch Symphonic Metal sensation Epica will shortly be releasing a new EP, The Solace System, a crushingly heavy collection of tracks recorded during the Holographic Principle sessions. Rhythm guitarist and harsh vocalist Mark Jansen got in touch to have a chat about it, and all things Epica. On the choice to leave The Solace System’s six tracks off The Holographic Principle, Jansen writes, “Some of those tracks did fit actually but we had to make decisions and we came to the conclusion to leave these specific six tracks out for various reasons. As the quality is high we didn’t...
