Daniel Snyder grew up in a traditional home not far from Washington, D.C. He spent his childhood and teen years watching the Washington Redskins compete in NFL games, and he has been a lifelong fan of the team as a result. While his passion for football never faded, he pursued entrepreneurial opportunities as a young adult. In 1985, he founded Snyder Communications, Inc. Under his careful guidance, the corporation gained prominence and grew in size and profitability. When it was listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Dan Snyder become the youngest CEO to head a listed corporation.
In 1999, Daniel Snyder had the incredible opportunity to buy the Redskins, which is now known as the Washington Football Team. Within the next year, Snyder Communications, Inc. was sold for $2.3 billion. At the time, this merger was the largest of its kind. With Snyder Communications, Inc. under new management, Dan Snyder was able to focus his attention on the Washington Football Team. Through his solid expertise in business ownership and management, Dan Snyder has elevated the value of this sports franchise over the years. At the same time, he has used his influence to improve the local community as well as communities around the world in various ways.
Specifically, Daniel Snyder started the Washington Charitable Foundation in 2000. Since that time, this organization has been responsible for raising and dispersing more than $29 million to support critical causes. These include wellness, health, outreach, education and other causes. Each year, the Washington Charitable Foundation has made bold contributions in various ways, and the foundation has collectively benefitted millions of people over the years as a result. For example, in 2019, funds were donated to support in-school wellness programs in four local school districts, and this directly touched the lives of more than 12,000 seventh graders. This same year, the organization supported literacy through the Read Program. Support was given to more than 38,000 students across more than 115 unique workshops and other events.
For many years, the Washington Charitable Foundation has actively supported Loads of Love. Loads of Love’s purpose is to keep children who live in poverty properly clothed so that they can excel in school. The program has been used in more than 80 schools in the local area.
On a national level, the Washington Charitable Foundation has supported grassroots initiatives to fight against social injustice. It has also actively supported the Capital Area Food Bank throughout the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020. Additional efforts have been made to support the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Children’s National Hospital. Both of these organizations have been able to build new centers or to expand facilities through donations from the Washington Charitable Foundation and Daniel Snyder.
In 2004, Indonesia and Thailand were devastated by a massive tsunami. The following year, Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the coastal states in the U.S. In both instances, Dan Snyder mobilized much-needed aid to these locations. He made similar efforts when Hurricane Matthew struck the Bahamas and Haiti. He even recruited a few volunteers from the Washington Football Team to assist with relief efforts on the ground in Haiti.
There are many other notable examples of Dan Snyder’s philanthropy through the Washington Charitable Foundation. Youth for Tomorrow, Beacon House, Ashburn Colored School and NFL-based military vet programs have also benefited from the attention of Daniel Snyder and the Washington Charitable Foundation.
Outside of Daniel Snyder’s philanthropy, he has remained an active member of the NFL. For example, he has served on the Stadium Committee, the Hall of Fame Committee, the Business Ventures Committee, the Digital Media Committee, the Media Committee and others.
