Things To Know About Clay Soil Stabilization

Clay soil stabilization is a process of alternating soils with similar components to increase the physical properties. By this process, the strength of the soil is enhanced. For construction materials, stabilized clay soil is more demandable. Therefore, it is a vital process in today’s construction world.

Necessity Of Soil Stabilization

As construction materials, stabilized clay soil is a great choice. By stabilization of clay soil, the physical properties of the soil increases. The soils will have higher resistance value, lower permeability, reduced plasticity, reduced pavement thickness, aids compaction, weather accessible properties, etc. stabilization secures clay soil from erosion. This process helps to preserve waterways, soils, unimproved roadways, etc. It helps in exporting unsuitable material, eliminating excavation, importing new materials. These are the major necessities of clay soil stabilization.

Methods Of Soil Stabilization

There are several methods of Soil Stabilization. Some of the methods are given below.

1.     Mixing Materials

The most commonly used method of Soil Stabilization is the mixing of stabilized materials. Different additives should be mixed in the correct percentage carefully. While mixing the materials, the soil depth and type should be a concern.

2.               Grouting

An expensive method of Soil Stabilization is grouting. It is mainly used for the buried areas of the earth. Different types of grouting are bituminous grouting, polymer grouting, chemical grouting, chemical grouting, clay grouting, chrome lignin grouting. In this process, stabilizer is injected into the soil.

3.               Electrical Stabilization

Another commonly used and expensive Soil Stabilization method is Electrical Stabilization. It is known as electro-osmosis and it is for clay-like soils. It works by inserting metallic electrodes into the earth. In this process, water is removed from the soil. This stabilization is mainly for the production of sturdy construction vehicles.

Materials Of Soil Stabilization

Here we are going to discuss some materials of soil stabilization.

1.     Lime

Slaked lime is one of the most commonly used materials for Soil Stabilization. It is mainly for clay-like and highly plastic soil. It increases the stability and strength of the soil.

2.               Cement

One of the most popular soil materials is cement. It increases the versatility of the soil.

3.               Bitumen

Tar and asphalt are two bituminous stabilization materials. They make the soil more stable and reduce water absorption. Also, these materials prevent erosion of soil.

4.               Geotextiles

The fabrics, which are used for producing soil, are called geotextiles. These can be used in wet areas.

5.               Chemical Compounds

Some of the commonly used chemical compounds, which can be added to the soil are sodium chloride, sodium silicate, calcium chloride. They improve the stability of the soil.

Types Of Soil Stabilization

There are three types of soil stabilization, which are-

  1. Biological Soil Stabilization- It is done by afforestation or planting.
  2. Physical Soil Stabilization- It is done by changing physical properties.
  3. Chemical Soil Stabilization- It is done by mixing soil with the chemical compounds.

Soil stabilization is an essential process for mechanical works. Most of the sturdy materials of mechanical work are made from raw material, which is produced by clay soil stabilization.
